Amazon "phone"

Amazon.com may launch a smartphone, which would mean the world’s largest e-commerce company would join the mobile phone sector just after Microsoft  and Google did. All of the new offerings from these firms move into a market already dominated by Apple and Samsung, and one which is crowded by second-tier companies such as HTC, Motorola and Sony . It would appear that Amazon has decided to take a long shot, which is extremely risky. That risk could be offset by the view of Amazon management that the company cannot be left behind in one of the hottest markets in the world.

Amazon already has one of the best-selling tablet PCs. It Kindle Fire leveraged the success of the Kindle e-reader. And Amazon has the advantage of its e-commerce site, which is visited by hundreds of millions of people. The Amazon brand has expanded well beyond books and has overwhelmed parts of the consumer electronics and media businesses. That means its leverage in smartphones is larger than it may seem at first.

Accomplishment in the smartphone industry is based on at least three things, and Amazon already has had some success in each. The first is the capacity to deliver a large array products for smartphones. For companies like Apple, this is software applications. For Amazon, it is media and potential special access to its e-commerce platform.

El niño

Climate Prediction Center (CPC) of the National Weather Service is forecasting the early formation of the El Niño weather pattern in the eastern Pacific Ocean. According to the CPC, there is a 50% chance that El Niño conditions will develop early in the second half of 2012.

In the Northern Hemisphere, the El Niño conditions have a 50-50 chance of forming between July and September and continuing into next year. Between October and December the odds rise to 65% in favor of the El Niño pattern.

El Niño typically means a warmer, drier winter in the northern half of the US, while the southern half of the US can look forward to a milder hurricane season and above average rainfall. Hotter, drier weather could have a serious impact on crops, while wetter weather in the south could ease drought conditions in many states.

If the CPC’s forecast is correct, heavy rains could begin earlier than usual in South America, threatening crops in Brazil and Argentina.

With global food stockpiles at or near five-year lows, the El Niño threat to crops could well push commodity prices up on corn, wheat, soybeans, and other grains. If the damage due to hot, dry weather to this year’s US harvest turns out to be as severe as predicted, stockpiles will dwindle even more, raising the spectre of food shortages well into next year and the year after.

La fondation Mozilla, éditeur du logiciel de navigation sur internet Firefox, mise sur un système d'exploitation "ouvert" et soutenu par les opérateurs télécoms pour concurrencer iOS d'Apple et Android de Google.

Sa nouvelle plate-forme, baptisée Firefox OS, repose essentiellement sur le navigateur internet du même nom et quelques technologies Linux, remettant le web au centre du jeu.

Mozilla espère qu'avec cette plate-forme, les fabricants pourront concevoir des smartphones moins chers que des modèles équivalents fonctionnant sous Android.

Mozilla dit avoir obtenu le soutien des opérateurs télécoms mobiles Deutsche Telekom, Sprint, Smart, Telecom Italia, Telenor et Etisalat.

Les fabricants chinois ZTE et TCL Communication Technology vont lancer les premiers smartphones sous Firefox OS début 2013. Selon les analystes, un large soutien des opérateurs télécoms et des fabricants de combinés est indispensable pour toute nouvelle plate-forme face à l'iPhone d'Apple et aux mobiles sous Android de Google, dont la part de marché est évaluée à environ 60%.

Gary Kovacs, directeur général de Mozilla, s'est déclaré confiant, estimant qu'il y avait de la place pour un système alternatif ouvert basé sur les technologies "open source" du web. Mozilla a déclaré miser sur la communauté des 3 à 5 millions de développeurs web qui utilisent déjà le langage HMTL5 pour créer des applications pouvant fonctionner virtuellement sur n'importe quel navigateur.

Selon Mozilla, Firefox OS permettrait de concevoir des smartphones à environ 50 dollars, hors taxes et subventions des opérateurs, contre 200 dollars en moyenne actuellement.

Un tel prix pourrait mettre la pression sur Microsoft dont la licence pour l'utilisation de Windows Phone peut atteindre 20 dollars par appareil.

Microsoft continue de perdre des points face à Google dans la bataille pour le contrôle du Web. Et ce bras de fer lui coûte cher. Cette semaine, le géant du logiciel a ainsi dû annoncer qu'il allait enregistrer une charge de 6,2 milliards de dollars dans les comptes de son dernier trimestre fiscal, clos le 30 juin. Une opération liée à la dépréciation de la valeur d'aQuantive, une société spécialisée dans les services de publicité sur Internet logée dans la division « online services » de l'éditeur de logiciels.

Rachetée en 2007 pour 6,3 milliards de dollars (soit la deuxième plus grosse acquisition du groupe avec le rachat de Skype l'an dernier pour 8,5 milliards), cette entreprise n'a pas permis à Microsoft de faire croître ses revenus dans la publicité en ligne au rythme espéré. Sa valeur a donc été revue à la baisse de façon drastique dans les comptes de la firme de Redmond. Cette opération comptable aura certainement pour conséquence de réduire les bénéfices trimestriels à 0.

JAPANESE scientists have discovered huge deposits of rare earth minerals in the country’s exclusive economic zone near an island around 2000 kilometres east of Tokyo, national broadcaster NHK reported.

The estimated 6.8 million tonnes of minerals used in hybrid car motors and consumer electronics is enough to cover Japan’s needs for 227 years, the report said.

Building materials maker USG Corp today announced a strategic partnership with the Oman’s Zawawi Group to expand the market for its wallboard products into India and the Middle East. The company expects to invest $60 million over the next two years.USG will acquire 55% of an Omani gypsum quarry along with its partner and expects to have mining operations started by the third quarter of 2013. 

The company also plans a 50/50 joint venture with Zawawi Group to build a new “low cost” wallboard plant in Oman in an enterprise zone offering easy access to port facilities for shipping finished goods to markets in the Middle East and India. The plant is expected to begin operations in the fourth quarter of 2013.

Home Inns & Hotels Management Inc, China’s biggest budget hotel operator, is maintaining its sales growth forecast as leisure travel resists the slowdown in Asia’s largest economy.

The Shanghai-based company, which runs almost 1,500 hotels in more than 220 Chinese cities, is sticking with a forecast of 20 percent revenue increase in 2012 as it plans to add 330 to 360 hotels annually in the coming three years. While room occupancy rate at Home Inns has fallen since November by as much as 3 percentage points, the level is still at 90 percent, the CEO said.
